HANGOVER BRUNCH

Our food photographer, Matthew, called me a couple of weeks ago and said, “Hey… you want to do a food shoot with Fanny Slater?” It took me .03 seconds to say YES to that proposal. If you have not had the privilege to be introduced to her cooking and larger than life personality, then let me do the honors.

{from her Food Network bio…}

In 2014 she beat out nearly 1,000 other hopefuls from across the country who entered Rachael Ray’s Great American Cookbook Competition. After four rounds of competition on Rachael’s daytime television show, Fanny won the grand prize of a publishing contract under Rachael Ray Books, an Imprint of the Atria Publishing Group. Fanny’s first cookbook, Orange, Lavender & Figs: Deliciously Different Recipes from a Passionate Eater, is now available online and anywhere books are sold. Fanny describes the book as Tina Fey meets Rachael Ray meets the girl next door who drinks craft beer and makes bacon jam just for fun. It’s filled with humorous childhood tales, presentation tips, and whimsical and contemporary comfort-food recipes. Fanny has appeared regularly on The Rachael Ray Show and has been featured several times in Every Day with Rachael Ray Magazine.

So, we just wanted to hang out and make some damn fine food and have too much fun for a normal Friday morning! We chatted about what kind of food we may want to play with and we both immediately landed on HANGOVER FOOD! You know, the food you want to eat when you wake up after a too-late night drinking too-many adult things. Super rich, a little fatty and supremely comforting, this is food that makes it allllll better.

Fanny’s Cheddar Frittata with Bourbon Onions, Kale + Toasted Pistachio Pesto and topped with Garlic and Paprika Roasted Baby Potatoes along with Abbye’s Drunk Sausage Gravy + Buttermilk Biscuits with IPA Sharp White Cheddar + Fried Egg were just the ticket. We weren’t even hungover that morning but we sure ate like we were!

Then, to make things even more enticing, Matthew brought along Marissa from Casablanca Coffee to teach Fanny how to make the perfect pour-over coffee. {Because 1: Fanny had never had pour-over WTF! and 2: every hungover person needs vats of coffee}

This lady is no joke! Please go buy all of her coffee HERE. We will talk more in a later post about how to pour the perfect cup.

Onward to the recipes! You’ll find printable versions of all of these below.

Let’s start with the sausage gravy and biscuits. First of all, you need a good biscuit. YES, you could totally make sausage gravy and use canned biscuits. I will not give you side eye about it. But… if you want to make your own, it’s super easy! Don’t be intimidated by the biscuits, loves. The critical factor to making the best biscuits is COLD butter and COLD whole buttermilk. You want to work quickly so that the butter does not heat up. But, these are pretty forgiving… so don’t fret, loves!

Next, you will need the best sausage gravy ever {ever}. This is the one. I steeped fresh herbs in the milk to give it over the top flavor and then poured a hefty serving of Duck Rabbit Stout into the mix because: BEER. Then you must must must top it with a perfect fried egg that still has a runny yolk and some sharp IPA cheddar cheese. {or whatever cheese you have laying around your cheese drawer. Unless it’s processed cheese product/plastic and then just, NO}

For Fanny’s Frittata, you’ll need a couple of stellar ingredients. Her Kale + Pistachio Pesto is over the top enough, but you also must add bourbon to the caramelized red onion.

What is happening??

Then you must top the frittata with her Paprika + Garlic Roasted Baby Potatoes because they make the plate pretty but more importantly, they make this dish just stupid good. Fanny is my new favorite person.

All of the printable recipes are below! Stay tuned for two ridiculously good cocktail recipes from Abbye + Fanny and some pour over tips from Marissa! {We just had waaaay too much fun that day}

As always, thank you to the talented Matt Ray Photography for all of the food images. You make our food look way too good.
