SORGHUM OLD FASHIONED

I have to apologize to you. I have been holding out on blogging this recipe for almost a year. Matthew came over and photographed this wondrous drink forever ago and then I FORGOT ABOUT IT. What the hell, Abbye?

Do you know what reminded me? Our first few chilly days here in our little beach town did. We went from instant sweat fest as soon as you walk out the door to pumpkins on the front porch and layers of flannel and denim. Temps like this make me want all the warm things… all the comfort-y things. Stews and braises and hot mugs to wrap my hands around and whiskey drinks that feel warm all the way down.

Last winter, Todd’s parents treated us to a week in Boone and dinner at The Game Keeper. It was one of those life changing dinners that I will forever remember every sip and bite that we feasted upon. My eyes widened when I read this drink off the menu and I was not disappointed. It was earthy and smokey and warm and the quintessential warm and fuzzy cocktail.

To make the sorghum simple syrup, put equal parts sorghum and water into a saucepan and heat on medium low, stirring until it has fully melted and combined with the water. Then cool it down to room temp and keep in a tightly lidded jar. (it’s important to use sorghum here and not just plain molasses)

Old fashioned

Matthew took that gorgeous picture for us up there. And then he drank that thing at 9:30 in the morning. Yes he did.
